Hey all, Astro Joe Garcia here again. Since moving to Houston in 1994, I've called many corners of this sprawling city home—by the Galleria, Westchase, Webster, Greenspoint, 1960, and now nestled in Northwest Houston. With nearly three decades of living, working, and growing in this dynamic urban landscape, I proudly consider myself a Houstonian.

But what does it really mean to be a Houstonian?

There's no one-size-fits-all definition. Being a Houstonian is as diverse and multifaceted as the city itself. Here’s my take on the essence of being part of this vibrant community, along with some questions to ponder about what makes you a Houstonian. Amidst our diversity, there are always commonalities that bring us together.

Birthplace and Early Experiences

Being born in Houston gives you a head start in soaking up the city's essence from the get-go. But is birthplace the only factor? How do your early experiences shape your connection to Houston, whether you were born here or moved here later? Length of Residence

Living in Houston for over a decade (or almost three, in my case) certainly embeds you in the city's rhythm. You learn the shortcuts to avoid freeway traffic, discover the hidden gems of local eateries, and understand the excitement that fills the air during rodeo season. How long do you think it takes to truly become a Houstonian? Regardless of the years, what shared experiences have you accumulated with fellow residents?

Current Residence

A significant part of being a Houstonian is supporting the local economy. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the eclectic Art Car Parade, and even cheering for the Astros at Minute Maid Park—these events knit us together as a community.
